CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: wu yu

Canon point: chapter 160 before they're rescued from the flooding mine
Age: early 30s (estimated 31-32) based on the fact that bu chonghua is in the 29 territory and wu yu is supposed to be older than him by some. he has a baby face that makes people often think he's quite a lot younger though.
History: basically all of wu yu's past is spoiler ridden, so...just as full disclosure. that out of the way...history!!!

*** content warning - relevant for entirety of app including manifestation descriptions and sample threads:
trauma, suicide, violence, kidnapping, gore, death, drowning, asphyxiation, drugs, murder. if i failed to warn for anything/overlooked it, i sincerely apologize! if it's not too much trouble, please let me know. i tried to cover it all, but inevitably i'm afraid one warning or other might've been missed.

THE RED MOUNTAIN: born in myanmar, the year is not confirmed but the timeline's math places it around 31 years ago, maybe a little more. opium consumption killed his father and mother, though not at once. it drove him to madness but from what can be gathered, he stopped eating it, and indeed did not eat much at all in the village from a very young age. work in the opium fields started as young as 5 years old. until his mother's sister arrives, he has no name or age. only with her arrival is he named "agui" and given an age estimated close to the age of her own son, "xie xing", seven years old. she promises to come back for him and take him away, but he never sees her again. in the time of her absence, not long after in fact, every village including agui's was razed. villagers and soldiers alike were murdered/blown up en masse. at fifteen, he meets ma yin, daughter of drug lord thayer and earns her admiration and also a place as her direct subordinate and bodyguard. this position allows him the luxury of proper food, clothing, and the permission to study. he self-teaches at a high level physics and chemistry, as well as the basics of literature.

THE FORK IN THE ROAD: ten years after he meets xie xing's mother, agui finally actually meets xie xing who is carrying out an arrest mission with the anti-drug department. xie xing is his cousin by blood and they look strikingly alike at face value. eventually they cooperate on a massive undercover operation that goes south (this takes place, it seems over a couple years, all told given the full run of his undercover work spans twelve.) xie xing dies and agui continues on in his place, burying the name agui (and ma tsai, his name as a drug dealer) and taking the name xie xing/ xie qianshan with him. both young men are believed to be dead by the drug world's side. agui using the name of xie xing continues on the undercover, not exposing what truly happened, knowing he as a criminal will not be accepted as the one who survived. he must stay and accumulate desired exposures and informations. eventually he lets slip back to hq 'news' of agui's 'death', and hq tries to recall him thinking he is xie xing.

over the course of the next years -- totaling at the edge of ten--, he accumulates multiple such 'successes' for the drug and criminal investigation department. in the ninth year of his undercover work, in the drug world, in the golden triangle, as it is called, the inherited moniker of 'the painter' becomes renewed with infamy for his work there. though this is a title given to more than one over time (always undercover agents working frontline of the drug world), at this point this is agui.

on the day the bureau is supposed to suppress the big drug lord known as 'shark', agui is found out by shark and nearly killed. shark escapes. one year later, agui is now 'wu yu' and moved into the criminal investigation unit of jinhai under captain bu chonghua.

THE BEGINNING AND THE END: with the criminal investigation unit, wu yu tackles multitudes of cases that are not as unrelated as they might seem at first. he and bu chonghua familiarize each other with themselves and discover eventually this is not their first time meeting. though the cases they undertake involve everything from murder to cults to drug circles and the black market, much of the point of the here and now in tunhai is character understanding and exploration. the past already briefly detailed is largely unknown, and that comes to light as well as the still present corruption of the system itself. when he's not throwing himself off of eight-floor construction sites or fighting in underground boxing rings, wu yu tries to 'exist' in the jinhai criminal investigation unit. thanks to himself, bu chonghua, and other external situations/circumstances, he is propelled from the edge of surviving to the brink of living. the canon point from which i would like to take him is near the end, but wu yu's various issues of self-worth, abandonment, and loss are lifelong things.

Suitability: as an undercover agent for twelve years, infiltrating big drug rings, being in prison, and being exposed, wu yu fits the bill of 'good person who has been through a lot of bad things and done a lot of bad things too', in order to survive. deft with a knife or a gun or whatever weapon he might find at hand (his literal hands), wu yu is well suited to an environment like this in that most of his life required him to 1. be well versed in waking nightmares; and 2. survive at all costs, once for himself, and later for someone else. he is inclined to figure all manner of situations out, and then to see said things through to their respective ends.

Is this a re-app? no

Inventory: 1. snacks
2. snacks
3. snacks
4. snacks
5. knife

* dear mods: if this is not kosher please disregard but a stray feral cat boy loves his snacks and a knife and that is just...that...could just be (1) line dedicated to snacks, and line (2) dedicated to Knife tho ....

Powers, abilities and/or inhuman traits: nothing superhuman, but he's a good shot with a gun, deep dig with a knife, etc. street smart and equipped to suit.

MANIFESTATION

Character flaws/traumas:

flaw + trauma deluxe |

pride: wu yu is prideful in that when push comes to shove he will often and still make big calls on his own, despite having someone in his life who not only deserves a say but has made it clear that wu yu does not always have to do things on his own. yet wu yu has said to him before his own "blind" conviction comes from always having had to do things without anyone, and this habit is lifelong. it will not just go away, and especially if wu yu thinks he can protect someone else by going it alone, he will even if that choice is actually more hurtful. in tune with that, wu yu has very little sense of self preservation for someone who has crawled out of the teeth of death so many times. in many ways, it isn't 'i want to live' but 'i must survive', and these two statements naturally beget very different decision making skills and concepts of what is okay to sacrifice/risk and what is not.

trauma 1 — as with the first submission, will mention that the scent of meat, the taste of meat, almost anything related, is a huge and immediate trigger for wu yu. there are so many things in his life he can handle but that is just not one of them. it makes him violently and immediately sick, to the point of nearly passing out at one point. for someone as rigorous and honestly quite strong as wu yu, this absolute canon nerf stands out glaringly and so too draws to focus its significance for him.

trauma 2 — the repeated violence to his village is palpable in his flashbacks. one of the things wu yu wants most is to give something to his home village, to do something that will also bring them out of the life he shared with them which seemed only inclusive of death, starvation, and all-around a living nightmare. soldiers, villagers, adults, children. everyone suffered and the suffering had tiers whose orders were as much a mess as the situation: death, opium consumption, madness, labor to death as young as five, guilted and forced eating of 'soup' made with human remains, gunfire and explosions whether army or drug-lord. the list goes on. this trauma is well contained, save for the human meat consumption, but it is very much there. several points in the story have wu yu's mind falling back into memory of the village at various points and it is almost always tinged or outright saturated in a nauseous, helpless fear.

trauma 3 — from childhood, wu yu has been running. it is very difficult for him to conceive of not being on the defense, not viewing everything with a degree of distrust especially in a situation like rhodos will present. rhodos itself echoes the promise of a canon enemy to give wu yu an island on which to live the rest of his days, which will make him feel already like he is being somehow chased even if others try to tell him this isn't so. this old unrest is made worse these days by having a person he does not want to be chased alongside him, a person he cares about more than himself. in any case, whether the fear/unease of being overtly chased or 'chased' undercover, sniffed out like a rat or weakness or both, the embodiment of running is in a vast majority of wu yu. it isn't enough to say he is scared of being 'caught', but more accurate to say he has forgotten how to 'stop' and not equate that to death/failure.

Manifestation name: Hunger Game (i doubt it would ever name itself lollll but in the app it says it can be what we'd call it OOCly soooo ? =D lmk if it's not okay though and i'll think up something else)

Character trait(s) the Manifestation reflects: this manifestation is inclusive of a trifecta of things that messily bond together in wu yu's present, past, and future: 1. his aversion/inability to handle meat in various ways, 2. the trauma of his repeatedly violated home village and the situation there (drugs, violence, cannibalism by necessity), and 3. the feeling of always being pursued/never being able to rest without it equalling either death for himself or worse, death for others.

Description: iiif a body mutilated by heavy artillery and previously intense malnutrition and poverty in general could also survive lifelong consumption of opium and rotting human flesh, then this is the creature! which is to say, the look would be of a disfigured human body, impossible to tell male or female (if it ever was), bleeding as if freshly blown up despite maintaining its vague human shape. the smell is that of ammunition, blood, and the more specific scent of often-not-fresh human flesh being boiled for the next meal. the trail it leaves is, as expected, generously bloody, and when it speaks its voice is again impossible to gender but more unnervingly: quiet, almost gentle.

Attacks and behavior:

overall: as with the first idea, this manifestation is wu yu-centric to the point of ignoring others unless they get in its way. basic auto-responses only range from: "eat." to "more." that said, its effects can and will target obstacles, whether intentional or accidental; anything 'in the way' is fair game unless mods feel this is too wide-reaching, in which case it can be revised to say 'anyone directly aggressing in clear defense of wu yu' will be a target. with wu yu, basic dialogue options (not by his choosing of course, rng it) are his old name "agui" and "eat" and "help" — the last 'sounding' like an earnest plea but offset by the fact that the manifestation is the one in pursuit.

action 1: hunger of course. the mind is absolutely overwhelmed with a crippling hunger, as if starved for a long, long time. with the sense of starvation accelerated, the intent of the manifestation is for target A to give in to their basest/most feral nature and hopefully try to eat what or whoever is closest. so forced cannibalism. if the target succumbs, they enter a sort of zombie-reminiscent state that would be difficult to break them from after that defeat. potential solutions not guaranteed: physical bodily harm, letting them take a bite out of you BEFORE trying to reason with them, killing them.

action 2: the first action is the preliminary antagonism. if action 1 doesn't work, then action 2 comes into play with a lot more violence, fueling the fog of intense starvation with the sounds of gunfire and explosions mashed into the distinct, unrelenting sense of being chased. if action 1 DOES work, then the sounds and sense of dreaded pursuit are potentially more gradual under that unrelenting hunger, fraying the nerves and duly tearing apart the individual's sense of trust of the surroundings. think war veteran lapses and add some horror elements and that is the vibe of it, and in wu yu's case, very much what he would experience: village being blown up complete with raining body parts, the resulting even worse famine where people ate water with boiled human meat, and then the sense that he has and always will be running, and that he has to do so, ultimately, alone.

Path towards resolution:

although the cosmetics and "biology" of the manifestation are largely meat oriented, the core is that second action's point: the unrest, distrust, and fear from the very violent and war-like state of his life from very early on. even when wu yu is 'okay' he is not necessarily 'at peace'. he can laugh, and he can smile, but the part of him that makes many others in canon view him as a 'beast' rather than a person, is incredibly core to him. others who view him more as human, look at the 'beast' aspect as a survival component, but it is true regardless of perspective that it has its flaws and weaknesses. the inclination of the injured individual to run is an accurate one for wu yu, whether perceived as human or animal; it is a tenacity to both survive and not endanger anyone else around him more than he has in the past. on top of all that, the way others perceive him as less than human is also something wu yu has however inadvertently, let steep into him.

this all said, to resolve his manifestation wu yu would have to do the following:

stop! running! okay, not that simple, but: wu yu would have to recognize that he IS running first and foremost, which would be very hard to do because sometimes his 'running' is as low-level yet constant part of his existence as breathing, teetering on the edge of diving off an eight story construction site or worse. he has to be able to see that some of his running is encapsulated in his do-or-die mode that is also an 'i'll do it myself' mode. it's rather convoluted, but this is the tangle of his mind which at core is rational, fussed over by a life of irrationality in terms of the traumas and experiences. wu yu's rationality in run-mode crosses the line and in order to remotely begin resolving his manifestation, he would have to truly see that for what it is. even if wu yu does not mean for it to come off this way, it would be easy to see his 'do it alone' knee-jerk reaction as a remark on those around him too, as a comment on weakness or otherwise.

stopping the running thing ties into perhaps seemingly basic things that are often very difficult because they are hard-earned habits. resolution comes thus also in the form of, well, reform: eliminate self sacrifice as the initial go-to (hard mode honestly, this is in his blood at this point and would take a long....long time). this is not just about no longer throwing himself in front of a bullet for someone; it is about the smaller or non-physical things too, asking wu yu not even to put himself first but to believe there is another way to handle a situation than jumping the gun as a human shield mentally, physically, or otherwise. so often in his life if the preemptive move was not made to survive, you didn't, and so he has carried that on at every level, distorted it however unintentionally. wu yu needs to recognize this deepseated habit born out of all the valid traumas and memories, and then see that it is not the only way to function and indeed is not even the most optimal anymore.

rhodos may be a different kind of hell, but to bastardize an overused quote: "one hell at a time, fellas."

tl;dr manifestation resolution is a very tall order, but it is important for his arc in rhodos that he at least try. given the environment and multitudes of scenarios available in rhodos, it is likely he will be presented with enough moments of "oh" to at least set his cat feet on that path. how far he gets, of course, would likely have to wait for a season 5.
